Tuesday, 22 November 2022: Cotulla

We checked into our Microtel in Cotulla for our last night in the US for a while.  We also acknowledged that we’d pumped our own gas for the last time today too for a while.  Several other “lasts” but so many “firsts” ahead too.  The drive is grueling, but it will be good to be back in Celestun.  We’d finally departed Green Bay on Saturday 19 November.  Justin had wanted to stay and have an early Thanksgiving with the kids; I had wanted to leave early.  We moved everything up early to accommodate Katherine and then she was fraught with delays.  I didn’t get to leave early and Justin did not get to enjoy Thanksgiving with his sons.  No matter how long I think this drive is, Katherine has been on the road for at least three more weeks since she started out in Vancouver.  I think I’ll smile and keep my mouth shut.

We didnt leave Green Bay intil close to 9pm.  We had teased earlier in the day that wed still leave today even if we made it only as far as Shawano, about 45 minutes.  As it turned out, I was driving first and I only made it about three minutes down the street to the local KwikTrip.  I needed to see our passports -- one more time.

We spent the last two days with Dellene — what a delight!  Her brother Steve was visiting her for his annual Thanksgiving trip.

On the way south, we stopped for BBQ at Rudy’s in Waco.  Not as good as Luling or NOLA, but darned good.  Steve made a great shrimp Alfredo for dinner one evening and Justin and I had Indian food buffet for lunch in our way out of town.

Justin and I took some time to look at property around the Austin area.  We only got as far as across the street from Dellene’s house when Justin stopped to talk to some workers who were loading crap into a dumpster.  … even though she said she wouldn’t sell… how cool would that be!  Now I don’t want to look anywhere else.  Leaving town, we did go look in Elgin and then Bastrop… I don't think so.

Meanwhile Dellene had 22 people at her house for a pre-thanksgiving dinner.  Even Melissa was there.
Since we’d spent the afternoon buying goods for Janet — cooking treasures she can’t find in Merida — and looking at communities, we didn’t get to our hotel until well after dark.  That will be the last driving at night we do for a while as we will not do that in Mexico.
We had time to watch an episode or three of Chopped.  Katherine and Tom got to the hotel before 11pm so we were all set for the journey.
