Thursday, 18 October 2018: somewhere south of Green Bay and north of Alvin

Fierce winds the last few days slowed us down. We didn’t get out on Wednesday as planned and today, we didn’t officially get on the road until after 9:30 pm.

Everything always takes longer than you think.  Thankfully Jason came over to chat with Justin about the shutters and we ended up contracting with him to do the entire job on the front window.  They will look great and it is done properly.  That left us to scramble to finish shutting down the house.  We still needed to go to bail and tarp Merlin.  Oh, this wasn’t fun.  Justin wasn’t happy with the job he was doing but he did his best and I tried to help.

We had teased that yes, we’d leave town on time even if we only made it as far at Steven’s Point, about two hours south.   Then that shifted to DePere which is about thirty minutes south. We’d already taken all the sheets off the bed and blown out the water lines when Jason asked if we’d be spending the night in Brussels. We should have been in Alvin already and we were only leaving Brussels. We drove straight through taking turns sleeping and a couple of stops where we both slept because neither of us was fit to drive.

Sometime in Friday, still north of St. Louis, we passed a pontoon boat headed to south Austin — follow that boat!  Lottery is at $1 billion. My goodness!  The temperature was 70 in central Arkansas and again pulling into Alvin, TX.

It had rained for maybe the last 600 miles and, dangit if we didn’t have a flat 6-8 miles away from Uncle Harold's. Anyone who’s ever driven in Houston knows that you gotta love the Gulf Freeway. We found a place to put air in the tire but it was leaking fast. When we were down to 15 psi there was a tire shop so we pulled in. Not the kind of adventure we were looking for. Brand new tires too.

Good news... we took our first Uber ride. Slick! Justin said we needed to call for a cab and I laughed. There are no

cabs in this part of town. I said we needed to call Charlsy. He refused. He said we’d already inconvenienced Harold and Charlsy enough and he wasn't about to let me call at 4am. Well, he downloaded the Uber app and we were set. Melvin got there in 15 minutes...1/2 the time Uber said. Great ride. Altogether 30 hours to complete what Google said would be a 19 hour drive. Many MANY miles where we couldn't even do speed limit. But here we are. We fell into bed — spent.
