Wednesday, 3 December 2025: temples near Angkor Wat

Chana was at our hotel to pick us up at 9am and our temple tours began.  He told us more that I could even comprehend and I took more pictures than I should have.

#1– Pre Rup   Hindu. 961 Built as a crematorium.

#2– East Mebon Temple. Hindu. 952. Built by the king to honor his parents, this temple was built on an artificial island that today is all dry.

We saw termite nests almost as big as the ones in Mexico.  We saw a wedding festival in progress.  Chana explained the custom: three days of celebration.  Family and very close friends and speeches on the first two days, then everyone, lots of food and dancing and a grand party on day three.  We saw roasted pig much larger than the ones we see in Mexico.  Sugar palm pancakes are one of the local delicacies, but we stayed focused on the past.

#3.  Sasom Temple. Buddhism. King took small steps to encourage people to embrace Buddhism and give up Hinduism. Built 123 hospitals and universities.

#4. Tom Som temple  --  much smaller, 12th century temple.  Vines surround the entry gates.  Quiet.

#5.  Preah Khan Temple. 12th century  Served as a monastery and university.

#6.  Neak Poan Temple in is the center of an artificial lake.  Originally built for healing as people would go into baths that would align with their spirit -- wind, fire, earth, water

#7. Preah Khan Temple  Also from the 12th century, over 100,000 people would have lived within these walls.

Drove through Angkor Thom, but we will save that for another day.

Sunset atop Mount Kok Chak.

We found a tempting pasta restaurant for dinner.  As much as I like Thai food and as great as the food was in Vietnam, I’m not too impressed with Cambodian food so pasta was welcomed.

Once we were home, I was all about a shower and then I fell into bed.

Justin and I are both puny. His cold is much worse than mine but mine still drags on. Add the heat on top of that and it makes for a long, long day.
