Happy birthday to Erich. It’s a big boy birthday for him — 40! Mandy just celebrated her big girl birthday too! Must be something in the water.
First on the agenda today was Chana and his tuktuk taking us to board a boat to go visit a floating village -- Kampong Phluk The houses this Khmer community are on stilts or floating platforms that adapt to the dramatic seasonal water level changes.
As we left the dock, Justin commented that our boat was “sketchy.” Coming from Justin…I was ready to head to shore right then. Watching our
captain shifting gears with his bare feet on the serious metal pedals... I assessed what my swim to shore would be like should it be necessary.
Like most others, we were in a boat by ourselves.
We switched to a much smaller flat boat for exploring in the mangroves. We observed that men drove the larger boats while women handled these smaller boats. Our particular lady was enjoying betel nut. Not sure if that gave her confidence but she sang to us most of our ride. We bought bananas from another lady in a makeshift floating market.
Back on our big boat and out onto the lake. Termed "Great Lake" by those in Cambodia, Tonle Sap lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Interesting that we've gone from the Great Lakes to the Great Lake.
Back to shore, Chana was waiting. Back to our hotel bidding farewell to Chana. Weve been with him for four days and he was wonderful. Justin chatted with him about politics and such of course; he was a wealth of information for tourists like us. And, so proud to be from Cambodia. He was an excellent Ambassador. I'd recommend him to anyone coming this way.
Upstairs for a nap.
Dinner at Sombas, Khmer/Thai restaurant recommended by Angelica. Yummy!
| We got a new idea for blinds. Simple casings, cord and loops. Super simple. |
