Sunday, 26 February 2017: Kaua

Today we must depart...this is a sad day, but more adventures await.  When Justin spent time with Geraldo yesterday he learned about El Cuyo up on the northern shore.  He is sold on going there so we looked at routes this morning that head in that direction.

One last breakfast with Peter and a few more conversations about the nuances of owning property here.  One more farewell with Ilsa who promised to look for a place on the beach we can rent.  Exchange of email addresses with all and we bid farewell to the beach ... at least for a few days.

The roads to Kaua were quite good compared to the first 100 km outside of Nuevo Laredo especially.  While last night was Carmival celebrations in Celestun, many of the tiny pueblos we passed through today we're having their celebrations on Sunday.  It was fun to see all the children dressed up in colorful and shimmering costumes and to be somewhat involved in the festivities.

We arrived at the Hotel Boutique and Spa Canek in time for dinner.  We sat outside by the pool and enjoyed the well-tended grounds.  There were a few seafood items on the menu but both of us chose to go with traditional Yucatan fare.  The pollo pubil, chicken marinated in a chipotle sauce, wrapped in banana leaves and baked in a clay pot, was very tasty as was the Poc-Chuc, roasted pork served with grilled onions, refried beans and a tomato sauce.

Our "suite" had a king-sized bed and a tub with jets!  The towels were folded into origami swans as welcome.  The Mexicans don't seem to be too much on high thread-count sheets so while some sheets are über soft (read: worn) these sheets were quite new and a bit scratchy in comparison.   I did get tickled when we checked in. The good folks in reception asked me to make sure that pet did not get up on the bed.  "Sure" I said, knowing that Gemma would never do that.

Today was Lindi's birthday.  Uncle Justin called and left a message of birthday greetings since he wasn't able to reach her.  We do hope she was out doing something very special.
