Tuesday, 27 June: Little Suamico

Sailboat races are held each Tuesday night during the summer at Wind Jammers Sailing Club.  Justin volunteered for both of us to work on the committee boat.  The committee boat is responsible for setting the course, monitoring the race and marking finish times.  Justin's hope was that if he was around, he'd get picked up to sub on one of the racing boats.  Kim and Pat were the other two guys on the committee boat.  At first it was nice just to be out on the water and, truth be told, it was a welcome break from the work at home.

We didn't go last week since Erich and Holly were in town visiting.  Justin asked Dave Gay to sub for us on the committee boat.  After that experience, Dave said he'd never go again.  An error was made with regard to the starting sequence for the three fleets and, apparently, it got ugly.  There is no money and precious little glory attached to these races, but emotions run high especially when the committee boat makes an unpopular judgment call or an error.  Thankfully, we are on the water and the skies are clear.

Terry cooks dinner each week for these 60 or so racers.  Her menu includes burgers, brats, sometimes, chicken breasts or pulled pork and sometimes sandwiches from cold cuts.  She's taken on a huge responsibility.  I've already decided that next year I will not be on the committee boat and although I won't volunteer to help Terry each week, I'd probably rather hang out with her in the club house from time to time.
