Thursday, 8 January 2026: flight to Hanoi

We’d arranged for late check out from our little hotel.  Our driver was coming at 1:00pm.  The extra time was welcomed since packing for a flight was a challenge with the treasures we’ve added to our “kit”. We’ve mastered the art of “shoe horning.”

As we drove to the airport we realized we’d never left the Old City. We never made it downtown; we never made it to the other side of the river. And it is all ok!

The flight was an easy hour and maybe 15 minutes.  Our car was waiting for us and we were soon welcomed to Hanoi and her chaos.  And air pollution!  That was not all haze.  The air quality is terrible.  Easy check-in to our hotel in the Old City — Hanoi Silk Classy Hotel and Travel.  Funky little hotel, perhaps even a little bit cheesy but, hey … we were on our way outside to explore.

Our exploration of the Old Quarter began.

Restaurants and massage venues abound!  Not even every corner, they are everywhere.  I felt like my jaw must have been slack… so much to take in.  Motorcycles buzzing by; horns all the time.  Chaos.  Justin called it beautiful, fascinating, and terrifying all at the same time.

First course for dinner tonight was clams.  I didn’t think I liked clams, but these were terrific. Second course at another restaurant where are fare was just as new and different and just as yummy!

Street food vendor preparing shrimp pancakes -- looks like I'll need to try those soon!
