Sunday, 28 December 2025: Chiang Khong -- across the Mekong River from HouayXay

We were up early and down to breakfast about 7am.  Back upstairs and ready to watch the Packers take on the Ravens at Lambeau for an 8:00 kickoff.  Like so many teams, the Packers are beaten up. Too many players are inactive; too many “next man up” in too many positions.  It was bleak.  No, it was really, really bad.  Even with the loss, we are still in the playoffs. And, with this loss, the Chicago Bears take the division.

Our driver came at noon and we were on our way to HouayXay at the Loatian border.

After less than a two hour drive and a short nap to Chiang Khong, we checked into our hotel, Baan Sakuna Hotel. This is nice!  Overlooking a valley of the Mekong, this area is super quiet. It’s away from everything.   We will be here only one night.  Justin and I have said for a long time that when we visit people or when they visit us, minimum of two night stay since only one night isn’t worth dirtying the sheets.  We’ve followed that on this trip also.  This is the first hotel where we have stayed only one night.  And, it is one of the few where I could definitely stay for a while.  If I knew going into it… if I had a couple of good books and a couple of good bottles of wine, yes, I could sit out on this deck and just soak it all in.  Maybe next time.  But, tomorrow, on to Laos!

There is a restaurant on site and thankfully, their food was great. Before dinner, we indulged in massages. The ladies came to our hotel room; both of us at the same time and on our bed. It was weird, but hey, it’s a Thai massage!
