Tuesday, 5 October 2021: Green Bay

Haiku for the day:

Falling leaves; crisp air

Warm waters of the gulf await

Celestun calls me

This morning when I was outside with Gemma the nip in the air was apparent.  The leaves are changing and it is time to go.

Tuesday means small plates at Chefusion.  The local restaurant is one of our favorites in Green Bay and I wanted to go one more time before we leave town. Our meal was disappointing in general but we move on.  I was bummed.  My expectations for eating out are that someone does something differently than I do or better than I do and excellent service.  Justin loves to eat out, thankfully and I do enjoy cooking.  And, as Dellene taught me years ago, eating out is not always the answer.  Sometimes bar food is ok and Green Bay has a lot of that. We had talked about going to Chives one more time but it just inset going to happen before we fly.

Around the world the glitches in supply chains promise to bring more challenges.  We are thinking about buying a chest freezer for the basement. Maybe Rick could buy it on Black Friday and have it delivered.  We are also looking at sheds. Goodness knows we need to replace the one we have!

We’ve lost our mojo for being in Celestun all winter, every winter.  The call to sail especially for Justin and wanderlust for travel for both of us is winning.

Monday, 4 October 2021: Green Bay

First stop...the dermatologist for both Justin and me.  While Mexico is good for the mind and the soul, the beach isn’t so good for the skin.  I had a couple of places frozen off and Justin had the spot on his nose treated again.

Next stop, looking for tile for the upstairs bedroom.  We are getting that upstairs suite tricked out, the AC/heater guy comes on Thursday to see about installing one of the Japanese type units.  If we get the tile fixed in the shower, we should be all good to go up there.

Over the weekend, we went to see Deb and Rick.  Justin helped them with shutting down for the winter.  I thought we were finished with blowing out the water lines, etc but Justin, good guy that he is, offered to help.  We need to go back since they forgot to pour in the antifreeze but then they should be set for the frozen days ahead.  The afternoon also gave us a nice opportunity to visit not only with Rick and Deb but also with Don and Amy.  I’m still pretty darned ecstatic that we sold and Justin is still pretty much not.  Being there for sunset didn’t help him.

Justin made Blood Mary's for the game
against the Packers yesterday.  Great
way to get into the game!

Saturday, 2 October 2021: Green Bay and Brussels

We’ve had pretty good luck in workers that Jason Busche has recommended so we called Kenny, Amy’s uncle, the tile guy.  He came out this morning so we could get his take on the needed repairs for the upstairs shower.

While Justin met with Uncle Kenny, I headed to the local Woman’s Rights March.  Most are calling it an abortion March, but I chose to look at the bigger picture of womens' rights and human rights.  Yes, I participated in a March.  I am proud to say that I am pro-child, pro-family and pro-choice.  There were about 200 others who participated in Green Bay.  Justin said he’d support me if I wanted to go to Madison or even if I needed to go to Texas where all this is stemming.  The good folks in Texas have decided that Roe v. Wade doesn’t matter and they are making abortions after six weeks next to impossible.  Since most women don’t even know they are pregnant at six weeks, this is quite an issue.  I have pretty strong feelings about this so down to the park I went and on to the courthouse steps I marched.  The group was loud and adamant; there were no counter protestors.  “Keep your rosary off my ovaries,” “Not the church, not the state, Women must decide their fate!” and “My body, My choice” were among our chants.  This day was chosen as the Supreme Court will start hearing arguments on Tuesday when their sessions resume.  Funny how this is fundamentally a medical issue that has been morphed into a political issue.  Do you see me shaking my head?

After quite the rigmarole, I booked our flights last week.  We will leave on Friday, 15 October.  The concerns we faced were with Gemma.  The Dept of Transportation changed the rules a year or so ago that emotional support animals are no longer allowed to travel in the cabin.  Gemma is too tall to fit under the seat and she sure isn’t a therapy dog.  Add to it now that most American flag carriers are not even handling pets in cargo!  What a mess!  I finally settled with Aeromexico out of Chicago.  Ric will drive us to Chicago for a mid afternoon flight to Mexico City.  There we will change planes for a flight into Mérida arriving just before midnight.  Ok, here we go.

Wednesday, 29 September 2021: dining room at Hartung

Ric made a scrumptious eggplant parmesan for dinner.  He knew Justin and I were busting it to get all our chores done in preparation for travel and he wanted to take food prep off of my plate -- What a dear!

I tapped into our seemingly endless tomato supply for a salad.  As you know, eggplant parm has about a squillion steps.  Ric said it would be a while until he makes it again but it sure was yummy tonight.  Homegrown eggplant and homegrown tomatoes... hard to go wrong.
