Friday, 5 April 2024: Laredo, Texas

We are home — well, sort of.

We left CelestĂșn on Tuesday as planned and even sort of on time since we were well before noon. After a short 5-6 hour drive we settled into our digs at La Venta Inn in Ciudad del Carmen. Day two was a beast of a drive into Puebla (we did not arrive before dark) before we zonked out in the Staybridge Suites. Mornings take a bit longer as we need to give the dogs time to eat and I have to torture Gemma to get her meds down her gullet. She and I make up and are friends again later in the morning when she curls up in my lap.

For day three we opted for a no-tell motel in Matahuala, Motel. (We did pay for twelve hours.).

Night #1 was about $150. We paid more for the two dogs than we did for the hotel room. Night #2 was also $150 and we snuck Gemma in inside her canvas duffle. Last night I said screw it, I’m not spending that kind of money again so we opted for a very convenient and  more than marginally acceptable alternative for $30 where all four of us were legal. We even paid the 200 peso deposit for the tv remote control and I logged us into Netflix.

Tonight finds us in Laredo in the good ‘ol’ U S of A in our Motel 6 Norte where we spent too much time in November. Tomorrow we will roll into Dellene’s in Austin. Her kids are hosting a retirement party Saturday afternoon and we will be there just in time.

We got two more puppies right before we left -- Yoda and Cannello are littler mates and they are barely one month old.  We will take Soxx with us to Wisconsin since Erich has decided he needs a Mexican beach dog.    Gemma and Soxx made for great traveling companions.

Monday, 18 March 2024: Casa Colibri

We’ve decided to leave 2 April.  We will meet our goal of staying here through Semana Santa (the week before Easter).

Work is winding down as we want to be able to enjoy the last bit of timevhere without work going on in the house.  Justin has finished El Senor de La Casa; Ricardo has finished painting the front gate and is now sealing the roof; Ivan and Jona will never be finished but they’ve connected the sink in Dellene’s room.  The talavera one we bought doesn’t really work so we are going a different route for now rather than buy a new faucet; Yoni and Santos filled in the shower in el bano principal.  Renovating that bathroom will be top of the hit parade when we return in the fall.

Justin and I are making sure we enjoy the beach and sunsets as much as we possibly can.  Yes, it’s hot enough for two showers each day but that also means it’s often two-a-day for the beach!  Goodness I love retirement!!!

I had my celebratory crab claws while Justin enjoyed a lobster dish at La Palapa.   We always enjoy visiting with Edgar, our favorite waiter there.

Beach erosion is a huge problem.  We will be front row before too long I am afraid.

Sunday, 3 March 2024: Casa Colibri

We’ve seen some firsts in the last few weeks:

First time we parked the car in the garage

First time we slept in the family suite (again)

First time I made sheet pan quesadillas

First time I made some awesome peanut butter filled chocolate cookies.  This recipe will make its way into the rotation for sure.

First time Justin baked a turkey -- ok, first time this year.

Tom and Meche came to visit.  Not a first but the first time in a long time.

Work continues on the house.  We torn out the shower in the main apartment.  It has always been just weird.  Now it will be better.  Justin continues to work on "the guy" in the side of the garage.

The puppies are growing up but the still like their binkies at night.

Certainly not the first time but we are enjoying the beach every single day we can.

First time we bought wedding rings for someone else.  Yes, Yoni asked Rut to marry him.  Our gift was their rings.  The three of us went to Merida bought rings and had them engraved.  She said “yes.”  It is so nice to be included in this chapter of their lives.

I’ve enjoyed this season in Celestun so much.  Last season I was set to sell; this year I am enjoying it more.  We host Pilates regularly, workers are in the house regularly and we provide lunch three to four days each week.   It is all good.

Thursday, 8 February 2024: Merida

We left Celestun and were on our way into Merida as Kelli and Carl's trip drew to a close.  Kelli, Carl, Justin and I enjoyed Domingo en Merida early in the week.  Brunch at Roses y Chocolat and lots of people watching.

Monday, was Constitution day in Mexico, and that totally wrecked our plans for visiting the ruins at Dzibilchaltun.  Plan B: pool time!  The temperature was nice but the wind was blustery.  My pool chair was moved by wind — with me in it!

Shopping:  Kelli found a bolsa and a talavera salsa dish — two items that were on her list.  We enjoyed some nightlife at La Negrita and got to see Jesus again.  Our evening came to an abrupt  end when I tripped over some road construction.  Totally took out my right side — my head, elbow, hip and toes.  I’m sure my toes were broken.  Yikes!

Thankfully, our week was filled with stories, flamingoes, and fun.

Thursday, 1 February 2024: Ria Celestun

Today we enjoyed the boat ride and flamingoes.  There seem to be so many more this year…thankfully.
